Do you have little children and want them to connect to God and the Bible?
How do you feel when you think about helping your kid’s connect to God through His word?
Intimidated? Overwhelmed? Guilty? Excited? Joyful?
As a follower of Jesus I have always wanted my kids to learn how to regularly connect to God through reading and engaging with His Word. Sometimes it has felt overwhelming and difficult and especially so when they were little!
If you are parenting the little years, here are 3 things that I found helpful when my kids were between 2-6 years old…
1. Keep it short.
My mother in law who led their church’s children’s ministry for years recommended to expect an attention span of 1 min per year of age. So a 1 yr old can give 1 min, a 2 yr old can give 2 min, a 3 yr old can give 3 mins and so on. So whatever you are doing, make sure to keep realistic expectations for your child’s ability to pay attention.
2. Use pictures, illustrations, etc.
Younger kids need tangible ways to understand. If I was reading John 3:16 to my littles and it said God loved the world I would give them hugs and tell them I love them so much. I would tell them God’s love for all the people is even bigger than my love for them. If we were reading about Jesus walking on water I might take a toy and see if it can stand up on water to show how awesome it was that Jesus could do that etc.
3. Consider the Time
Timing is everything right? I love engaging Scripture with my kids when we are sitting and eating. Or at least when their tummies are full! This way their hands are busy and they can focus for a few minutes. Figure out the best time for you and your kids and then do what works best for your family.
Every chance you get to lead your kids to God through His word is significant. Even if it flops. Even if it goes great.
May you have inspiration and encouragement this coming season to help your kids know the God of the universe who loves them!
